7th Century BC- Phoenicians settle in Tripolitania
Significance
Before this settlement the population in Libya was made up of many different Berber tribes. This is the beginning of civilization in Libya.

AD 643- Arabs conquer Libya and spread Islam
Islam is still the most predominant religion within Libya, making this a continued and powerful moment in Libyan history.

16th Century- Libya becomes part of the Ottoman Empire.

1934- Provinces are united by Italian forces.
After much resistance the provinces unite, causing Italian immigration to increase with the plans of Libya becoming part of a larger Italy.

1951- Libya becomes independent
UN resolution prompted Libya’s independence. This is the first time since the Berber’s that Libyans were left to lead their own country.

1969- Gaddafi military coup
This is one of Gaddafi’s first moves into leadership—the beginning of an era for the country.

1980’s- International relations decrease
Relations with Europe and America become tense. Military forces are used and diplomatic ties are ended.
1992- Lockerbie Bombing
In an effort to force bombers over to the UN sanctions are imposed on Libya.

2006- Oil and gas exploration auction.
Oil and Gas are a large contributor to the Libyan economy. The auction of licenses for the exploration of these goods boosted the economy.
2011- Anti-Gaddafi Uprising
This uprising, and the murder of Gaddafi lead to a complete revolution within the country.
